Choosing between a tethered or electronic motorcycle airbag is a key decision for any rider looking to improve safety. Each system has its own operation, benefits and limitations. This complete guide will help you choose the best option based on your riding style, budget and protection needs.
How does a tethered motorcycle airbag work?
A tethered airbag is connected to the motorcycle with a strap. In case of a fall or when the rider is separated from the bike, the tension triggers the airbag, which inflates within milliseconds.
Advantages of a tethered airbag
- Simple and highly reliable mechanical system
- No battery or charging required
- More affordable than electronic systems
- Quick reuse after replacing the CO2 cartridge
- Proven technology with minimal maintenance
Disadvantages of a tethered airbag
- Must be connected to the motorcycle
- Can be forgotten when dismounting
- Requires sufficient pull force to activate
- Less effective in certain crash scenarios
How does an electronic motorcycle airbag work?
An electronic airbag uses advanced sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes to monitor rider movement in real time. It detects accidents automatically and deploys without any physical connection to the motorcycle.
Advantages of an electronic airbag
- No physical connection required
- Very fast detection of accidents
- Works in a wider range of situations
- Higher level of protection in complex scenarios
- Advanced and constantly evolving technology
Disadvantages of an electronic airbag
- Higher purchase cost
- Requires battery management
- Possible software updates
- More complex maintenance
Which motorcycle airbag should you choose?
Your choice depends on your riding profile:
- Daily use and simplicity: choose a tethered airbag
- Maximum safety and technology: choose an electronic airbag
Conclusion
Both systems provide excellent protection. The most important factor is to choose an airbag that suits your needs and to wear it consistently.
